Blackberries & Raspberries -Year ONE
When we bought our house one of my goals was to plant some plants around our back porch that would provide shade and privacy. The north side of the porch I reserved for berries. I specifically wanted blackberries and raspberries and the amount of sun/shade the area provided was ideal.
I found some on sale at Home Depot and the adventure began! I will admit my timing for this adventure was not so good. It was a last-minute decision simply because I found them on sale. I ended up planting them in 100 degree weather. Could be why they were on sale? I dug about a 2’X2’X18″ trench and added soil, compost and some of our clay dirt.
Here is day one! Those sticks are plants…don’t laugh.
Reagan the photo-bomber!
At first the bunnies were not interested in my little stick plants. As they grew that quickly changed! We ended up adding a little fence to keep them out. Leftover chicken wire from the coop was perfect for that.
The blackberries and Raspberries continued to progress and thrive in out hot environment! We added Feta poo and they really took off!
Blackberries are susceptible to aphids so we released some lady bugs as a precaution. You can see more about that adventure here.
This past week we had two buds one bloomed and the other is still in the process. Looks like fruit might be in our future???
