Visiting Goat -Feta has a boyfriend?
A couple of weeks ago our neighbor asked if she could keep her buck at our house for a while. She needed time to regroup and figure out her milk goat situation. In exchange she would give me a free breeding to her prized buck Smelvis. It is so ideal to have the buck come to us, I wanted to refresh Feta anyway so it all worked out. We won’t miss out on any milk and we are happy that Feta can stay at home on her organic feed and treats.
So I met up with our neighbor to move some panels to our house and get Smelvis all set up. Early on Feta knew something was going on and she didn’t like it. She is the princes of the back yard and she believes all additions must be approved by none other than her. She walked around with her hackles up and made little noises at us all day. No one else in the yard cared in the slightest. We moved Smelvis in and confirmed her suspicions, she was not happy. She promptly moved her trampoline as far away from his fence as she could, laid down on it and glared at him. How dare the humans bring another goat into her yard…the idea of it!
Smelvis is a kind and gentle soul he mostly hid from us behind the tree. We tempted him out with treats and snacks and soon he warmed up to us. We gave them sometime to get used to one another through the fence and then introduced Feta a few times. As you can see Feta’s response was less than desirable.
Then this week we put Feta in the same pen as Smelvis so the magic could happen. Feta has warmed up to Smelvis a bit but hates the idea of sharing a pen. O’Haira whom apparently is a glutton for pain begged Feta to come back. When his outbursts failed to get her back he resorted to touching her beloved trampoline, a no no in Feta’s world. Feta will be in with Smelvis until they breed, I hope that is soon because January/ February kids would be so cute!
