Spring Has Sprung
This week spring arrived, this is marked by the shedding cycle of our animals. Once the goats horses and dog start shedding it’s time to get moving on the garden. Everyone but the horse has started shedding so I think we have a week or two until we need to plant. However this weekend I need to prep the soil.
This year is going to be different though! My Mother and Father-in-law gifted me a gently used tiller, weed-eater, and hedge trimmer in one. All it needed was a carburetor, and easy task for Husband. While Husband worked on the carburetor I set to work prepping the garden for tilling. As I did the work I found some amazing things.
This winter I had decided to let the garden rest and stopped watering most things. This morning as I went through pulling out old plants I realized that the garden had no intention of resting. I harvested a boat load of root vegetables, beets, turnips and carrots. As I was checking everything out I found that the asparagus has already started to come back. I should have taken a few of the new shoots a few days ago.
Half way through my prep Husband had fixed the tiller and I just had to give her a try. It was amazing and one heck of an arm work out! I started on the tilling that afternoon and stopped once I ran out of gas. I found a bunch of grubs as tilled and tried to separate them from the soil for the chickens. Chickens are not vegetarians and the love them some grubs!
I continued working on the soil on Sunday as Husband worked on the fencing project. It only took me about half the day. I did in one weekend what last year took several. I absolutely love this tiller. I still had plenty of daylight left so I got the weed-eater attachment set up and knocked down some weeds around the yard. It was a really productive weekend.
I’m really excited for the coming week, I am going to try to install a watering system.
