Broken World, Prone to Prejudice
The other day as I completed housework I was thinking about some of the things that are going on in our world today. There is an uprising of violence and crime, authority is ignored and our nation is divided. Groups bicker, fight and commit violence over what lives matter.
In that long thought train something that was taught at church about prejudices kept coming to the front of it all.
We know that God understands our plight as humans, struggling to be in the world and not of the world. After all He came to dwell with us as a human and had the same experiences we do.
God’s word shows us that he knows about our human condition. He knew we would be prone to have our prejudices.
To some degree we will all have some bias, preference or prejudice. Whether it is the people that we decide to hang out with, do business with, or talk to. Whether it is the things or people we follow online.
God knew we would experience this and so it is addressed in His word.
I charge you before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the elect angels, that you observe these things without preferring one before another, doing nothing by partiality. 1 Timothy 5:21
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. Galatians 3:28
It’s hard to go out of our comfort zone, I would prefer to surround myself with people, obsessed with chickens, that have milk goats, that eat the same way I do, that are Christian, that are ultra conservative, that would be a happy little bubble for me.
We as Christians are not called to live in a happy little bubble with people that are exactly like us. Christians are called to step out of our comfort zones and LOVE.
The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” Mark 12:31
Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. 1 Corinthians 13:4-8
We are able to love this way because of the way He loves us.
We love because he first loved us. 1 John 4:19
It comforts my heart to know that God understands what it is like to be a human in this ugly, broken, world. He gives me an example of how I am to treat others, how I am to love and forgive. When I fail to do those things, when I grieve Him, He will continue to love me, always giving me grace.
Good time for a throw back???
